Outdoor Dining in New Braunfels

This week was so cool that I'm loving eating outside again- no matter what time of day. We thought we'd share some of our favorite outdoor dining spots over the next few weeks, starting with New Braunfels.

Atmosphere in Gruene's Historic District
The Gristmill is always a favorite. Officially located in Gruene's historic district, The Gristmill is a sprawling restaurant by the Guadalupe River, with multiple outdoor seating areas under the oaks. It's a casual place to unwind in the evening, with live music.
The Gristmill has been around for 30 years and features old fashioned southern classics like chicken fried steak, the Gristmill Burger, and fried catfish. For Tex Mex food lovers, they have spicier dishes like Tomatillo Chicken and the Guadalupe Chopped Steak. Don't leave without trying M.J.'s Fudge Pie a la mode.

Lively Dining in the Heart of Downtown
Recently I met friends at Krause's Cafe and really enjoyed the walk through downtown New Braunfels. There were so many shops and activities to check out later. Whether sitting inside or on the patio, the entires cafe has an open air feel. They also have live music most days.
As the name suggests, there is quite of bit of German fare on the menu, like the Wild Game Sausage Sampler, the Rueben, Texas Schnitzel, and over 100 beers.
If you are into lighter dishes don't let that scare you away. Both the breakfast and dinner menus are full of vegetarian / vegan options like Vegan Lentil Soup, the Veggie Omelette, and Asian Salad. I think I had Avocado Toast but I really wanted the Bananas Foster French Toast.
An extra bonus for eating early (They open at 7:30am.) on Saturday mornings is walking through the farmer's market and craft area just outside the cafe.

A Family Style Gathering
We haven't actually eaten at The River House yet, but it's on our list. We plan to reserve a brunch table one Sunday after church. The River House is in an old home and has the feel of a gathering place for big family meals. They also have live music outside, too.
A sample from their menu, much of which is made with locally sourced farm ingredients: Fried Green Tomatoes, Brunch Mimosa Carafes, Tea House Quiche, Black Truffle Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, Wagyu Meatloaf, and an intriguing Sunday Fried Chicken family dinner.
