Sights and Sounds of Christmas in San Marcos

by Adam Carter

Christmas lights at night in downtown San Marcos.

Fewer daylight hours means more opportunities to enjoy Christmas lights!

There's no better place to see them than at San Marcos' Sights and Sounds of Christmas Festival. The city hosts this festival on Thursday through Sunday for two consecutive weekends starting today, December 1!

Get to know your neighbors by strolling through the Christmas lights and enjoying carols performed by local choirs, school bands, and jazz bands. Put your heads together and try to solve the scavenger hunt hosted by the Will Thrive Foundation or grab a bite to eat. Families with children will especially enjoy the carnival, petting zoo, reindeer games, and the Town of Bethlehem re-enactment.

Bring your Christmas list because Santa's Gift Shop will feature wares from local businesses. Several local sponsors have teamed up to provide an adult Christmas Spirits lounge as a getaway from the excitement with a riverfront patio view.

If you’re feeling a little extra Christmas spirit, there’s a  Jingle Bell 5K run on Saturday morning of the10th, with a music-filled route through downtown. You can be that person who runs around town with an antler headband on their head. The kids will enjoy their own Fun Run inside the festival grounds.

Part of the Charm of this festival is how the whole downtown area is decked out in a million little lights, many of which will remain after the festival ends. It makes for the best evening walks with family or friends from the square, to the festival grounds, and along the river. I enjoy it all winter long. See you there.
